New Delhi: The Haryana Special Task Force (STF) Tuesday took gangster Sombir alias Motta into custody upon his deportation from the US, officials said. Motta was in detention camps in the US for nearly 17 months before his deportation.

Brother of Rohtak-based gangster Anil alias Chippi—who is a key syndicate member of the Lawrence Bishnoi-Kala Jatheri gang and operates from several districts of Haryana and Delhi NCR—Motta had six criminal cases against him. Chippi had been previously been charged by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), alongside Bishnoi and Satwinder Singh alias Goldy Brar.

Chippi and his gang members have been charged with several revenge murders in their home district, Rohtak, where the gang ran a fierce rivalry with the Chhajju Ram gang in the region.

Officials said that Motta hails from Karor village in Haryana’s Rohtak district, and an Interpol Red Corner Notice was issued against him on the basis of inputs from the state STF.

Motta has become the sixth fugitive gangster deported to India through the coordinated efforts of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Home Affairs ministry. Previously, Joginder Gyong, Naresh Narsi, Manipal Badli, Kunal Joon, and Lakhwinder Lakha have also been deported.

Last month, the Haryana STF had also arrested four members of the Rohit Godara-Goldy Brar gang, including the trio involved in killings in the US. Three of those accused, named Balraj, Ravinder and Raman, had fled the US after carrying out the murder of Lawrence Bishnoi’s aide and firing on another one.

Sources in the Haryana Police said that Motta was released from jail in 2022 before fleeing India on a forged passport.

“He came out of prison in 2022 and acquired a passport fraudulently using fake documents from RPO Ghaziabad in December 2023 and fled from India to Thailand and thereafter to Dubai,” a Haryana Police official privy to details told ThePrint. Following his deportation, Motta was taken into custody and will be produced before the court on Wednesday for police remand, officials said.

Motta spent around six months in Dubai before securing a visa for Spain. From Spain, he took a flight to Nicaragua—a popular route for entering the United States illegally. “He crossed into the USA from the Arizona border,” the official added.

“Earlier, CBI got the red notice published against Sombir Motta through INTERPOL on 11.02.2025 on the request of Haryana Police. CBI coordinated with NCB Washington for the location and deportation of the subject to India,” a CBI spokesperson said Tuesday.
