Gurugram, Oct 2 (PTI) Five persons have been arrested here for allegedly attempting to kidnap a man at gunpoint outside the upscale Galleria Market here following a dispute over a property deal, police said on Friday.
The accused had planned to abduct the youth to pressure his father into either cancelling a property transaction or paying them extortion money, they added.
According to the police, the incident took place on September 21 when the victim parked his car and went to a nearby cafe. Upon his return, three armed men intercepted him. One suspect sat in the front passenger seat while two others boarded the rear seat.
“The person sitting in the front seat pointed a pistol-like weapon at the youth and ordered him to drive with them. When the victim resisted, the accused tried to open fire, but the weapon failed to discharge,” a senior police official said.
Showing presence of mind, the youth immediately accelerated the vehicle forward. Spooked by the sudden movement, the two suspects in the rear seat jumped out of the moving car and fled.
Shortly after, the victim was forced to halt due to a scooter blocking the road ahead. Taking advantage of the pause, the primary accused in the front seat also abandoned the vehicle and fled, leaving the country-made pistol behind inside the car, police said.
Following a complaint, an FIR was registered at the Sector 29 Police Station. A team from the Sector 43 Crime Branch subsequently launched a probe and arrested the five suspects from Gurugram on Thursday.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Praveen and Sumer Singh of Gurugram; Shiv Shankar of Faridabad and Aman and Hemant of Delhi.
During interrogation, it was revealed that Praveen had entered into a property deal with the victim’s father, who later sold the same property to another buyer. Nursing a grudge, Praveen conspired with Sumer to execute the abduction, police said.
“To execute the kidnapping, Praveen and Sumer procured a weapon from Nuh. Sumer then roped in his acquaintances Shiv Shankar, Aman, and Hemant into the conspiracy. The accused are currently being questioned,” said Naveen Sharma, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Crime, Gurugram. PTI COR APL
