Government will spend Rs 1,000 crore over a period of three years to nurture sports talent; SAI will be restructured with many of its services to be outsourced to cut red tape.
New Delhi: The Centre has chalked out a major plan to overhaul sports culture in the country. Among the steps to be taken are sponsoring athletes right at the school level and recognising and incentivising coaches who have trained medal winners at various levels. In order to ensure professional management of sports in India, the ministry of youth affairs and sports has also decided to privatise many services.
Identifying schools
– Sports minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said the government will spend Rs 1,000 crore over a period of three years to nurture sports talent. In the first phase, 20,000 sportspersons will be prepared from among 150 schools.
– The ministry will spend Rs 1.5 lakh every year on each player. Within 12 years, that player will be a professional. He will make it to the under-17 team of school and be part of ‘Khelo India’ school games.
Under-17 talent pool
– The annual school games will be a six-day event, which will be broadcast on TV.
– A budget of Rs 40 crore earmarked for this.
Sponsorships
– The ministry will select 1,000 sportspersons and offer them Rs 5 lakh annually for eight years.
– A budget of Rs 250 crore has been set aside.
Incentives for coaches
– A coach producing an international medal winner will get 50 per cent of the set incentive; 30 per cent will go to the coach who has trained the player at college or intermediate level and 20 per cent will go to the grassroots coach
– All under-17 players will send names of their coaches, which will be recorded in the ministry database.
Restructuring SAI
– The Sports Authority of India (SAI) will be revamped.
– By 2022, its strength will be reduced by 50 per cent; many services will be outsourced like auditing and cleaning to bring in professionalism.
Investment in private schools
– Government will invest in private schools and colleges.
– There will be foreign tie-ups.
– Along with 100 government schools across the country, one private school from each district will be funded by GOI.
– Tie up with 6 medical colleges to promote sports science
Global firms
International sports companies that have done work for Olympics will be roped in.
Mobile App
– All sports stadiums will be mapped.
– An app will be launched to answer queries such as ‘how to play’, ‘where to play’ among others.

Superb initiative, finally it’s an Olympian medallist as our sports minister, the results will soon start to pour in. He exactly knows how to nurture and build world champions. As country men we need to support the government’s initiative with great zeal , enthusiasm and vigour. Coz it’s every Indians dream to see our sportsmen stand on the podium and see the tricolour fly high and our anthem played in the backdrop……..trust me it sounds good.
