Chamoli, Jun 11 (PTI) Four people were killed and four others injured when their vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Thursday, officials said.

The accident occurred between 4 pm and 5 pm on the Dewal-Ghes motor road in the Dewal development block.

Chamoli District Disaster Management Officer Nand Kishore Joshi said the vehicle, a white Mahindra Bolero, carrying eight passengers, was on its way back to Ghes village when the driver lost control.

According to the officials, the vehicle went out of control about 100 metres ahead of Losari village.

Local residents and eyewitnesses said the vehicle first struck a wall on the side of the road, reversed and then rolled down a slope of about 500 to 600 metres into the local Kail river.

Police, administration and District Disaster Response Force (DDRF) teams launched a rescue operation immediately after receiving information about the accident.

With the help of locals, all four injured individuals were rescued from the site and shifted to the government hospital in Dewal for treatment, Joshi said.

The bodies of the four deceased were recovered from the gorge and sent for post-mortem.

Those killed have been identified as Janki Devi (28), Arjun Singh (60), Aalam Singh (54) and Deepu (7), all residents of Dewal. PTI COR AKY NB
