Motihari (Bihar), Oct 2 (PTI) Four girls drowned while bathing in a pond in Bihar’s East Champaran district on Friday morning, police said.

The incident occurred around 9.30 am at Bankat village in Inarwabhar panchayat under the jurisdiction of Paharpur police station.

The deceased have been identified as Sonawati Kumari (13) and her sister Phoolwati Kumari (10), Sonali Kumari (10) and Pratibha Kumari (12), all residents of Bankat village.

“Five girls had gone to the pond near the village to bathe. Four of them entered the water while one remained standing on the bank. The four girls reportedly ventured into deep waters and drowned,” Paharpur Circle Officer Ramsurat Paswan said.

The girl who remained on the bank ran back to the villagers and informed them about the incident, after which police and local administrative officials reached the spot, he added.

“We have recovered all four bodies and sent them to Motihari Sadar Hospital for postmortem,” Paharpur SHO Devendra Kumar said.

East Champaran District Magistrate Saurabh Suman said, “Once it is formally confirmed post-investigation that the deaths occurred due to drowning, the Disaster Management Department will provide appropriate compensation to the next of kin of the deceased.”

Police are trying to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the deaths, officials said. PTI CORR SUK ACD

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
