Thiruvananthapuram, Apr 25 (PTI) VACB arrested a former cashier of the KSEB sub-engineer office at Tholikkode here, who had gone absconding after a court ordered him to surrender to serve a sentence in a corruption case, officials said on Saturday.

Sakkeer Hussain, a native of Nedumangad, was arrested by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) from Charummoodu here on Friday morning.

According to VACB officials, the case relates to the alleged misappropriation of Rs 1,37,277 collected from electricity consumers in 2004 at the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) Sub Engineer Office, Tholikkode, which was not deposited in the bank.

A vigilance case was registered against Hussain, who was then serving as a cashier at the office.

After investigation, the VACB filed a charge sheet before the Vigilance Court in Thiruvananthapuram, which, in 2013, found him guilty and sentenced him to two years of rigorous imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs 2,000, under various sections, officials said.

Hussain subsequently challenged the conviction before the High Court, and later the Supreme Court, but both courts dismissed his appeals.

Officials said that the Supreme Court in 2023 had directed him to appear before the Vigilance Court in Thiruvananthapuram to undergo the sentence.

However, he absconded rather than surrender to the court, officials said.

Following his arrest, Hussain was produced before the Vigilance Court in Thiruvananthapuram and later remanded to the Central Prison. PTI TBA TBA ROH
