New Delhi: The Know-Your-Vehicle (KYV) process for cars, jeeps and vans will be discontinued for all new FASTags to be issued from 1 February, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) announced Thursday.

The reform is expected to bring major relief to lakhs of vehicle owners who have been facing inconvenience and delays after FASTag activation due to post-issuance KYV requirements, despite having valid vehicle documents.

Under existing norms, there is a provision for validation of vehicle details after a FASTag has been issued. This will be discontinued from 1 February.

For the validation of details under KYV, owners have to submit images of their vehicle, license plate, FASTag sticker and the Registration Certificate (RC) to correctly link the tag to their vehicle. The process confirms the tag’s accuracy and links it to the VAHAN database.

FASTag activation will now only be permitted after details have been already verified from the government’s Vehicle Aggregation and Harmonisation Network (VAHAN) database, according to an NHAI press release.

In case the details are not available on the database, issuing banks will be responsible for validating the particulars using the Registration Certificate (RC) before activation.

FASTags sold through online channels will also be activated only after complete validation by banks.

For FASTags that have already been issued, KYV will no longer be a mandatory, routine requirement. It will only be required in specific cases where complaints related to issues of loose FASTags, incorrect issuance, or misuse are received.

Until some complaint has been filed, no KYV will be required for existing FASTags.

The new norms entirely shift the responsibility of validation from owners of vehicles to issuer banks, the NHAI said.

As per the NHAI, these reforms are a reflection of its “continued commitment to making the FASTag ecosystem citizen-friendly, transparent, and technology-driven, while simultaneously strengthening compliance and reducing grievances”.

According to official figures, there are over 8 crore users of FASTag in the country as of 15 August 2025, with a penetration rate of around 98 percent.
