Mumbai, Apr 8 (PTI) Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal on Wednesday alleged that the Central government’s “failure” to fulfil electoral promises has pushed farmers into distress.
“The promises made to farmers before coming to power have not been fulfilled. Not only are farmers not getting remunerative prices for their produce, but the cost of cultivation has doubled and tripled under the BJP rule,” he said while addressing a ‘Nyay Satyagraha’ protest organised by the Mumbai Youth Congress.
He alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “na khaunga, na khane doonga” slogan has proved hollow as the “country has been witnessing systematic loot for the past 12 years”.
Sapkal alleged that the Centre entered into a trade agreement with the US under pressure, which has adversely affected farmers.
“Modi is scared of threats from (US President) Donald Trump. This agreement has broken the backbone of farmers. The youth, workers, labourers and farmers have been deceived,” he claimed.
Referring to the 2019 Pulwama terror strike, Sapkal claimed the “source of the 300 kg of RDX” used in the attack is yet to be traced.
He alleged that perpetrators of the Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 people were killed, are yet to be apprehended.
“During Operation Sindoor, while the Indian Army was performing strongly, a phone call from Trump made Narendra Modi surrender,” Sapkal alleged.
Drawing a comparison with former Prime Minister (late) Indira Gandhi, he said she had brought Pakistan to its knees, leading to the Shimla Agreement, while the present leadership has compromised the country’s self-respect.
Sapkal said the Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, is fighting to protect the Constitution, democracy and culture. PTI MR NSK
