DELHI BLAST LIVE UPDATES | 8 dead, 20 injured in blast near Red Fort; suspected terror angle being probed

New Delhi: At least eight people lost their lives and 20 were injured in an explosion that took place near Red Fort metro station’s Gate no. 1 Monday evening. The blast occurred in a white Hyundai i20 car at a red light near the metro station.

According to the Delhi fire department, they received the call about the blast at around 6.55 pm. Police have taken the owner of the car, identified as Salman, into custody.

10.31 pm: Investigators actively probing terror angle to Delhi blast

Investigators are now probing a possible terror angle to Monday’s blast. Home Minister Amit Shah is at the spot along with Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha.

9.52 pm: Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoles lives lost.

“Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the blast in Delhi earlier this evening. May the injured recover at the earliest. Those affected are being assisted by authorities. Reviewed the situation with Home Minister Amit Shah Ji and other officials,” PM writes on X.

9.25 pm: Home Minister Amit Shah directs multi-agency probe

Union Home Minister Amit Shah speaks to Delhi Police Commissioner, Director of the Intelligence Bureau and directs a coordinated multiple agency investigation in the case.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah says, “This evening, around 7 pm, a blast occurred in a Hyundai i20 car at the Subhash Marg traffic signal near the Red Fort in Delhi. The blast injured some pedestrians and damaged some vehicles. Preliminary reports indicate that some people have lost their lives. Within 10 minutes of receiving the information of the blast, teams from the Delhi Crime Branch and Delhi Special Branch arrived at the spot. The NSG and NIA teams, along with the FSL, have now begun a thorough investigation.” 

He adds: “Orders have been given to examine all nearby CCTV cameras. I have also spoken to the Delhi CP and the Special Branch in-charge. The Delhi CP and the Special Branch in-charge are present at the spot. We are exploring all possibilities and will conduct a thorough investigation, taking all possibilities into account. All options will be investigated immediately and we will present the results to the public. I will be heading to the spot shortly and will also visit the hospital immediately.”

9.14 pm: ‘Saw body parts, one dropped dead in front of me,’ say witnesses

Witnesses described scenes of chaos and panic after the car explosion near Red Fort Metro Station in Delhi on Monday, with body parts strewn across the road and multiple vehicles consumed by flames in quick succession.

Mohsin Ali, a resident, said he heard a loud thud before smoke and ash engulfed the area. “Before I could realise what happened, one person dropped dead in front of me,” he said. “When I reached, the fire had spread and consumed everything. After the first explosion, two more cars burst into flames.”

9.10: Blast may have been triggered from a white i20 car with 3 occupants

Initial investigation indicates that the blast was triggered from a white i20 car that was in motion with three occupants, and not from a parked vehicle.

“The blast appears to have occurred at the rear side of the car,” a source said, adding that no crater has been formed at the site, which is usually seen in explosions involving high-intensity devices.

Police have not ruled out the possibility of a terror attack. Forensic teams are currently at the spot.

9.08 pm: No pellets or shrapnel; deaths & injuries due to burns

According to police sources, initial probe indicates the injured have sustained burn injuries. Deaths were also due to burns. 

There are no pellet or shrapnel injuries, which are typically seen in blasts involving explosives. No ballistic material or projectile has been recovered from the spot so far.

9.01: Forensic team arrives at the spot

Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha says, “Today at around 6.52 pm, a slow-moving vehicle stopped at the red light. An explosion happened in that vehicle, and due to the explosion, nearby vehicles were also damaged. All agencies, FSL, NIA, are here… Some people have died, and some have been injured in the incident. The situation is being monitored. The Home Minister has also called us, and information is being shared with him from time to time.”

8.57 pm: Eye-witnesses express shock. ‘Saw someone’s hand on the road’

“When we saw someone’s hand on the road, we were absolutely shocked. I can’t explain it in words…” a local resident tells ANI. “We saw body parts spread on the road. No one could figure out what happened. Several cars have been damaged,” says another eye-witness. 

“I fell three times due to the explosion. It felt as if we were all going to die…Several cars were damaged in the incident,” local shopkeeper tells ANI.
