Nahan (HP), Aug 17 (PTI) A herd of elephants entered the Paonta subdivision, causing extensive damage to fields, tubewells, and houses, leaving local farmers terrified.

Elephants breached the boundary wall of a house in Bahral village and caused significant damage to the surrounding area. According to villagers, no one was present in the house at the time, averting a major tragedy on August 14.

Villagers reported that in the past few days, the elephants also destroyed a tubewell belonging to farmer Mahima Singh in the Behral area, resulting in heavy financial loss.

In Satiwala village, the elephants severely trampled a paddy crop as well as cherry and banana trees in farmer Neetu Ram’s field.

Villagers state that the increasing movement of elephants in the area has created an atmosphere of panic. They mentioned that a few days earlier, elephants had killed cows belonging to farmers Sonu Ram and Thagga Ram of Satiwala village. Farmers are frightened as the herd has begun to loiter near their homes.

Block President of the Bharatiya Kisan Union Jaswinder Singh Billing has demanded that the Forest Department take immediate and effective measures to prevent the elephants from entering villages.

He insisted that farmers who suffered losses due to the elephants should be given adequate compensation and warned that if the elephants are not stopped and compensation is not provided promptly, protests would be staged outside the offices of Forest Department officials. PTI COR BPL MPL MPL
