New Delhi: The University Grants Commission has decided that a common entrance test will be held from this academic year to determine admission for undergraduate courses in all 45 central universities.

The test will be held in the first week of July, UGC Chairman Jagadesh Kumar said Monday.

Kumar said a student’s Class 12 marks will no longer matter as admission will be based on the Central University Entrance Test (CUET) score. The CUET will be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The test pattern will be announced Tuesday.

Kumar said CUET would be compulsory for all central universities — when asked if it would apply for Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh University. Each university will take in students on the merit list prepared by NTA.

NCERT text books will be the basis of this entrance test which will have three sections – first, language; second, the specific subject the students want to study; and third, general knowledge and reasoning.

CUET 2022 will be held in 13 languages – English, Bengali, Punjabi, Odisha, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Assamese, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Urdu.

Foreign students who wish to take up undergrad courses in India will not be required to take the CUET but will be admitted on merit.
