Mumbai: More than three months after the case was first brought to their attention, Mumbai Police have arrested a Cuffe Parade resident for sexually assaulting and impregnating his daughter.

According to police, the case first came to light last September when the 20-year-old woman, who is differently-abled, with a hearing and speech disability, pointed to her stomach and gestured to her grandmother that she was not feeling well. The grandmother took her to the Cama & Albless Hospital where upon medical examination it was confirmed that she was five months pregnant. The hospital then informed the police about it.

Police initially arrested two men, an adult and a minor, whom the woman identified. Of the two, one was released on bail while the other is still in jail.

It was only revealed during later stages in the investigation that the woman had been sexually assaulted by multiple individuals. According to police, the father initially denied having any knowledge of the sexual assault, and even refused to register a complaint.

Owing to the woman being differently-abled, she was put through counselling and consultation.

As the probe progressed, the police collected samples of 16 people, including the father, and sent them for DNA analysis.

“So whoever was in touch with her, we took DNA samples from them. She being mentally challenged and not being in a state to speak, on the basis of suspicion we took DNA,” a police officer in the know of the case told ThePrint, requesting anonymity.

“It was becoming difficult to get to the details as she was changing things and had to be dependent on an interpreter. And that’s why we decided to go for DNA analysis to determine what happened and how it happened,” the police officer added.

An FIR was finally registered on 22 September after medical examination revealed that the sexual assault took place between 21 March and 21 September 2025.

The final breakthrough came on 27 January this year when results of the DNA analysis revealed that the DNA sample collected from the father matched that of the foetus. The father was then arrested and booked under BNS sections 64 (2)(i), 64 (2)(k), 64 (2)(m), 74, 92, 238 (b), along with provisions of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
