Chaibasa (Jharkhand), Apr 25 (PTI) The West Singhbhum district administration has begun a probe into alleged illegal withdrawal of money from the district treasury in Chaibasa, an official said on Saturday.

West Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner Manish Kumar told reporters on Saturday that an investigation has begun into the illegal withdrawals from the treasury in Chaibasa.

“Till the probe is completed, it would be premature to comment on the issue,” the deputy commissioner told reporters.

West Singhbhum Superintendent of Police Amit Renu told PTI that the investigation is being done by a police team after the alleged illegal withdrawal issue surfaced with allegations against a few police personnel.

“The team has been asked to probe into the issue, and only after the probe is completed we can comment on the exact amount illegally withdrawn and the exact number of persons involved in the embezzlement,” the SP said.

On Saturday, Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Chaibasa Sadar Bahaman Tuti conducted inspections at the District Treasury. But refused to speak on the issue to the media.

However, a source in the district treasury said that the district treasury officer was scrutinising documents related to all withdrawals made on behalf of the police departments from the previous year up to the current fiscal.

A massive salary fraud in Jharkhand had surfaced earlier this month, with fraudulent withdrawals worth several crores discovered across Hazaribag, Bokaro, and Ranchi treasuries and the arrest of several police staff.

Jharkhand Finance minister Radha Krishna Kishore had ordered a comprehensive audit of all district treasuries in the wake of reports of fraudulent withdrawals. PTI ANB RG
