New Delhi: An Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer died Friday morning allegedly by jumping off the fourth floor from a building at a government colony in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri, the police said.

The incident was reported at 6:20 am this morning.

Jitendra Rawat, the deceased, was posted as the Director at Overseas Employments & Protectorate General of Emigrants [OE & PGE] in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the police said. He was in his 40s.

The 2011 batch IFS officer lived with his mother in the government-allotted home, located in the colony for MEA personnel, the police said.

“He jumped off the fourth floor and was declared dead when taken to the hospital. No suicide note has been recovered. No foul play is suspected,” a senior police officer told ThePrint. “Initial investigation has revealed that he was suffering from depression and was undergoing treatment as well.”

“Legal proceedings have been initiated in the matter. We are waiting for his family to arrive,” the police officer added.

Rawat is survived by his wife and two children, who live in Uttarakhand. He joined his last position six months ago. Before this, he was the director, counter terrorism. The IFS officer also served as the counsellor, political and press information and culture, in Brussels for 11 months.

“An officer of the MEA passed away in the morning of March 07, 2025 in New Delhi. The Ministry is providing all possible assistance to the family, and is in touch with the Delhi Police. The Ministry stands with the family in this hour of grief and difficulty,” the ministry said in a statement.
