New Delhi, Jul 23 (PTI) A crestfallen family got its smile back after the Delhi Police solved a theft case and recovered Rs 12.5 lakh worth of gold and silver jewellery that had been saved for their six-year-old daughter’s spine surgery at AIIMS here.
Police said they recovered the Rs 12.5 lakh haul and arrested the alleged burglar on Friday.
The officer said the family was devastated after burglars stole the jewellery they had saved by selling their valuables, and it was their only hope for their child’s treatment; consequently, the family was contemplating mortgaging their house to continue treatment.
“The family had sold their valuables and pooled together their lifetime savings to raise the money for the surgery. And after the theft, they had begun considering mortgaging their house to continue the treatment,” a senior police officer said.
Police said the case was reported at the Keshav Puram police station on July 22 after burglars allegedly broke a window pane of the family’s house in the Ganeshpura area and fled with gold and silver jewellery valued at around Rs 12.5 lakh.
Given the circumstances, senior officers directed that the investigation take priority.
“A special team examined technical evidence and tracked down the suspect within six hours. The arrested accused has been identified as Abhishek alias Raje (25), a resident of Wazirpur, who has previously been involved in two burglary cases. During interrogation, he disclosed the location where he had concealed the stolen ornaments,” the officer said.
Police said the stolen valuables were returned to the family, enabling them to proceed with the child’s treatment without the immediate financial crisis caused by the theft.
“The timely recovery ensured that our daughter’s treatment could continue without interruption. Police not only recovered our hard-earned savings but also restored our hope during one of the most difficult phases of our lives,” the family said.
