New Delhi: The Delhi Police’s Crime Branch has arrested a woman and her son from the Pandav Nagar area for the murder of her husband in June.

In a modus operandi similar to that of Aaftab Amin Poonawala, the duo chopped the man’s body in several pieces and stored them in the refrigerator.

They then disposed of the body in east Delhi grounds — part by part.

This comes weeks after the arrest of Poonawala, 28, who hacked his live-in girlfriend Shraddha Walkar to 35 pieces on 18 May before strewing the parts all over the city, mainly in the urban forest of Mehrauli.

It is learnt he killed her “in the heat of the moment” after a fight. The couple reportedly argued a lot over marriage, money and trust issues.

Refer the Pandav Nagar murder, the police first found body parts in June, but could not identify who they belonged to as the flesh had rotted.

They even probed if the parts belonged to Shraddha Walkar once her murder came to the fore.

Sources told ThePrint that the body parts were later identified as that of one Anjan Das, husband of Poonam and step-father to Deepak.

The mother and son allegedly fed sleeping pills to Das and then killed him. “They chopped his body in 20 pieces, stored them in the fridge and later dumped them across East Delhi,” the source said.

In June this year, the local police found human parts stuffed in a bag in East Delhi’s Ramlila ground. The police source added: “CCTV visuals from that time showed the mother and son on their way to dump the body parts.”

The Delhi Police has registered an FIR under Indian Penal Code sections — 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence). A forensics team is collecting more samples at the moment.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Amit Goel said later: “On 5 June, some body parts were recovered for the Ramlila Maidan, east district. For the next three days, two legs, two thighs, a skull and a forearm were found. A case was filed after that.”

He added: “Efforts were made to identify the body. It seemed like a gruesome murder. Footage was analysed, a door-to-door verification was done and then we could identify the victim. The deceased is suspected to be Anjan Das.”
