Customer cancels Zomato order over Muslim delivery boy, company’s reply wins internet

Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal said on Twitter they don’t mind losing business if it comes in the way of their values.

New Delhi: A customer Tuesday cancelled his order on food-delivery app Zomato as the man assigned to deliver his food was a “non-Hindu”. But Zomato’s response that food has no religion is winning hearts on social media.

P. Amit Shukla, whose username is Namo Sarkar, posted Tuesday: “Just cancelled an order on @ZomatoIN they allocated a non hindu rider for my food they said they can’t change rider and can’t refund on cancellation I said you can’t force me to take a delivery I don’t want don’t refund just cancel.”

Shukla even threatened to discuss the issue with his lawyers.

Following this, Zomato, replied to Shukla’s tweet Wednesday, saying, “Food doesn’t have a religion. It is a religion.”

Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal also took to Twitter and said they were not “sorry” to lose on business if it came in the way of their values.

“We are proud of the idea of India – and the diversity of our esteemed customers and partners,” he said.

Twitter hails Zomato 

Zomato’s classy reply has won hearts on Twitter.

Founder of Jammu and Kashmir People’s Movement Shah Faesal was among those who praised the food-delivery company. “@ZomatoIN you have won million hearts and stomachs. I am downloading the Ap,” he tweeted.

“Love when big organisations show spine and uphold the idea of India, these are trying times,” tweeted another user Roshan Rai.

Zomato was criticised too

However, some Twitter users lashed out on Zomato in connection with a post related to ‘halal’ food. Halal food is that which adheres to Islamic law.

“Food doesn’t have a religion….but then @ZomatoIN does this! Why? Because we cant hurt the feelings of seculars,” tweeted a user.

Zomato then issued a statement, saying, “The halal tag on Zomato is a result of restaurants seeking that distinction – not us as aggregators…Again, we play no role in this categorization…We provide this information, so that you as a customer, can make an informed choice about whether you want to eat halal meat or not.”
