Lucknow, Jun 22 (PTI) A notorious criminal carrying a combined reward of Rs 1.25 lakh and wanted in several sensational cases, including the shooting of a sub-inspector, was killed in a police encounter in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh Police said on Monday.
The deceased criminal was identified as Lalan Singh alias Lallan, of Bihar’s Samastipur district.
Additional Director General of Police (STF and Law and Order) Amitabh Yash said Lalan Singh sustained gunshot injuries during an encounter with a police team led by Additional Superintendent of Police Lal Pratap Singh on the intervening night of June 21-22 on the Sarsawa-Nakur Road in Saharanpur district.
Singh was initially taken to CHC Sarsawa and later referred to the Saharanpur district hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
ADG Yash said Lalan Singh was involved in multiple heinous crimes, including the killing of seven people, among them two sub-inspectors, a bank cashier and a security guard. He was also allegedly involved in bank dacoities, cash van robberies and looting of government firearms.
The ADG said Singh was wanted for the shooting of a sub-inspector and robbery of his service pistol in Varanasi and a firing-cum-robbery incident in Chandauli. Both crimes took place in November 2022.
A reward of Rs 1lakh was announced by the Commissioner of Police, Varanasi, while Chandauli superintendent of police declared Rs 25,000 for information on his whereabouts.
Police said Singh was involved in crimes along with his brothers and other gang members. During the encounter, one of his associates managed to escape from the spot, and efforts are underway to arrest him. PTI KIS AMJ AMJ
