Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 21 (PTI) As Kerala goes to polls on April 9, a prominent Sangh outfit has raised concerns over what it termed as growing challenges to national unity, calling for collective efforts to counter “narrow regionalism.” A right-wing cultural think tank based in Thiruvananthapuram, the Bharatiya Vichara Kendram (BVK), adopted a resolution at its state committee meeting held here on Friday.
The organisation, in the resolution, said the current political landscape in the state reflects a contest between those supporting integration with the national mainstream and those opposing it.
The BVK alleged that both the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) have, beyond political differences, weakened national integration through their policies and positions.
It claimed that the two fronts have consistently opposed several initiatives and decisions of the Union government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including measures aimed at strengthening national unity.
Referring to the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution, the organisation said the move — carried out by the Centre citing its temporary nature — faced strong opposition in Kerala, which it described as contrary to national interest.
The resolution also criticised the state government’s stance on central welfare schemes, alleging that projects were either delayed, renamed, or inadequately implemented due to political opposition to the Centre.
It further pointed to opposition by state parties to legislations such as the Citizenship Amendment Act, alleging that such resistance aligned with “divisive forces.” The BVK also expressed concern over the proposed “nativity card” by the state government, stating that matters related to citizenship fall under the jurisdiction of the Union government.
Additionally, it criticised certain cultural and development initiatives in the state, alleging that they promote a narrative that distances Kerala from the broader national identity.
The organisation urged “all patriotic forces” to remain vigilant and actively resist attempts that, it claimed, could undermine the unity and integrity of the country while emphasising that India’s diversity is rooted in a shared civilisational ethos. PTI LGK KH
