Bijapur, Apr 25 (PTI) A 36-year-old contractor was arrested on Saturday for allegedly abetting the suicide of a government school headmaster in Chhattishgarh’s Bijapur district, police said.

Devashish Mandal, a resident of Darapara, was taken into custody after a note recovered from the victim named him, an official said.

Raju Pujari, the headmaster of a school in Palnar, was found hanging in a forested area near Cherpal village on April 22, he said.

A case of unnatural death was initially registered at Kotwali police station, following which inquest and post-mortem proceedings were conducted, the official said.

Subsequently, a handwritten suicide note naming three persons, including Mandal, was found on the deceased, he said.

Preliminary investigation indicated that a dispute over payment related to school building construction work may have led to the incident, the official said.

“Mandal was executing the work under the supervision of the School Management Committee. Around 40 per cent of the payment had been released, but differences reportedly arose over settlement of the remaining amount,” he said.

Pujari had been under mental distress and was allegedly under pressure from Mandal and others in connection with the payment dispute, he said.

Based on the evidence collected so far, police have registered a case of abetment to suicide and arrested Mandal, the official said, adding that efforts are underway to trace other persons suspected to be involved. PTI COR NR
