Thiruvananthapuram, May 7 (PTI) Congress MLA Mathew Kuzhalnadan on Thursday said UDF allies Congress and IUML do not interfere in each other’s decisions regarding the selection of legislative party leaders.

Responding to reporters over reports that the the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) favours V D Satheesan for the chief minister’s post, the Muvattupuzha MLA said the media should not create confusion over the issue.

Kuzhalnadan described the IUML as the backbone of the UDF.

“Whenever the UDF or Congress faced a crisis, the IUML worked for the unity of the front. Whenever the IUML was attacked politically and physically, the Congress ensured its protection,” he said.

He said the two parties were working together unitedly like brothers.

“Will the Congress say who should be the IUML’s leader in the Assembly? We will not say who should be the leader or minister of the allied parties. Dont create confusions,” he said.

Whoever the party decides will become the chief minister, and there is no other procedure, he said.

Kuzhalnadan said the UDF’s victory was the result of the hard work and sacrifices of party workers over the past decade.

“This is the party’s mandate and victory. It is the result of the hard work of party workers over the past 10 years. It did not happen overnight or just by waving a magic wand. Our workers were attacked, shed blood and went to jail. Their sacrifices are not small,” he said.

He said the Congress was a national party that had previously chosen several prime ministers and chief ministers.

“The decisions of the party will be just, and the leadership has the capacity to take them,” he added.

The debate over the chief ministerial candidate has intensified in the state, with the names of V D Satheesan, K C Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala being discussed for the post. PTI TBA TBA ADB
