New Delhi, Aug 17 (PTI) Two people stopped a DTC bus in East Delhi to rescue an injured pigeon dangling from a glass-coated kite string in the middle of the road, with other commuters stepping in to help save the bird on Monday.
The act briefly brought traffic to a standstill in the locality.
A video circulating on X showed a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus stopped under a flyover, with people gathered around devising ways to rescue the pigeon. The 1-minute-46-second video captures several passengers and bystanders standing.
One person is seen helping a man as he climbed up the bus with the help of others. He carefully reached for the bird while others keep their fingers crossed.
Initially, the panicked bird flutters, tries to free itself, but the string restrains it. The man catches it gently, cuts the ‘manjha’, and hands the bird to someone on the ground, who completes the rescue.
Everyone watching this unfold with bated breath heaved a sigh of relief.
The use of synthetic kite strings, commonly known as Chinese ‘manjha’, has been a particular concern as birds can become entangled in the strings while flying or after the discarded strings get caught in trees, electricity wires and other structures.
The footage struck a chord among animal lovers online. Many netizens shared the video with the caption: “Humanity still exists.” This followed a string of reported incidents related to ‘manjha’ around the national capital.
On August 15, a 25-year-old man died after a ‘manjha’ slit his throat while he was riding pillion on a motorcycle on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway in Ghaziabad, police said.
On Sunday, Pankaj Kumar, a resident of the Palla Power House area in Faridabad, was seriously injured while riding a motorcycle after Chinese ‘manjha’ — a banned kite string — got entangled around his neck, causing an approximately 11-centimetre deep wound on his neck and a 5-centimetre gash on his forehead.
A day before Independence Day, the Delhi Police arrested two men for allegedly possessing prohibited Chinese ‘manjha’ in separate operations in central Delhi and seized 42 packets of the banned string and three chakris. PTI VBH ASD ASD
