Bengaluru, Sep 14 (PTI) A delegation representing the Christian community in Karnataka led by Archbishop of Bangalore Peter Machado, on Monday met AICC president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge here and raised several long-standing concerns affecting the community in the state.
Among others, the delegation sought the repeal of a legislation commonly known as the “Anti-Conversion Act.” During the meeting, the delegation sought Kharge’s intervention and support in addressing the issues and ensuring that the concerns and aspirations of the Christian community receive due consideration at the appropriate levels of government.
Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge was also present.
According to a statement by Archbishop of Bangalore, the delegation urged the repeal of the Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Act, commonly referred to as the Anti-Conversion Act, expressing concerns over its provisions and implications for the Christian community, particularly regarding constitutional freedoms and the right to practise and propagate one’s faith.
It also sought nomination of a suitable Christian representative to the Karnataka Legislative Council, saying such representation would provide the community a platform to voice its concerns and contribute to the legislative process, it said.
The delegation further demanded an exclusive one per cent reservation for the Christian community under the Backward Class classification, citing the socio-economic challenges faced by sections of the community and seeking greater opportunities in education, employment and other areas of development.
It also sought adequate and meaningful representation of members of the Christian community on various government boards, corporations and other statutory and nominated bodies.
Kharge gave a patient and attentive hearing to the delegation and held a detailed discussion on the issues raised, it said.
He assured the delegation that he would take up the issues with the concerned leaders of the state government and provide necessary directions for their consideration and appropriate action, it added. PTI AMP SA
