New Delhi: Days after the Ministry of Home Affairs handed over the security of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the charge has been given back to the Delhi Police, ThePrint has learnt.
Gupta had been accorded Z-category security detail by the CRPF with a total of 22 personnel deployed in her security cover, after she was attacked at her residence during a public meeting last week by a man from Gujarat’s Rajkot. However, sources say that the security has been returned to the Delhi Police before a formal transfer of security protocol could take place.
Sakariya Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai, the man who allegedly attacked the chief minister, was taken into custody by Delhi Police.
Delhi Police will provide both proximity and peripheral protection to Gupta, a Z+ protectee.
ThePrint had previously reported that the CRPF was asked to take over the CM’s security within hours of the attack last Wednesday.
Gupta’s cabinet confirmed that Rajesh carried out a recce of the CM’s residence Tuesday, a day before the attack, and that he had come to the CM’s public hearing that day with the sole purpose of attacking her, which is why he had no documents.
Delhi Police had then arrested him, registering a case and invoking the charge of attempt to murder. Investigators have arrested one more accused person from Rajkot.
CCTV footage from outside Gupta’s residence in Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh area from last Wednesday morning, accessed by ThePrint, shows Rajesh purportedly getting off a rickshaw.
