New Delhi, Aug 17 (PTI) Over the last two decades, the BRICS alliance has expanded from an economic dialogue into a platform for defining its approach to critical environmental challenges, a senior environment ministry official said on Monday.

According to Tanmay Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the alliance has broadened its relevance to areas including sustainable development, climate resilience and adaptation, resource efficiency and the circular economy, as well as environmental governance.

Kumar made the remarks during discussions at the BRICS Senior Officers’ Meeting of the Environment Working Group (EWG) and Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development.

The BRICS EWG was established in 2015 during the first BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting in Moscow. It was envisioned as a platform for BRICS countries to address fundamental environmental priorities, exchange experiences, share best practices and strengthen collective action.

The Contact Group on Climate Change and Sustainable Development was established in 2024 as a mechanism for cooperation on climate change issues among BRICS member countries.

Monday’s event was held under the overarching theme of India’s BRICS chairship 2026 — ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’.

The 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting will be held on Tuesday, according to ministry officials. PTI ALC RHL
