Jaipur, Apr 21 (PTI) Mahila Congress national president Alka Lamba on Tuesday alleged that an “anti-women” BJP deliberately delayed the implementation of the women’s reservation law.
Lamba said the women’s reservation legislation was passed unanimously in 2023, but the government failed to notify the law for nearly 30 months.
“The government attempted to mislead the public by convening a special session of Parliament during ongoing elections in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu,” she said at a press conference at the Congress office here.
“This was not about bringing a women’s reservation law. That law has already been passed. What the government brought was linked to delimitation, but it was presented in a way to create confusion,” she said.
Lamba said the Opposition had sought an all-party meeting before the special session, but the government shared no proposal. She also questioned the timing of the session, saying that several members of Parliament were busy campaigning for elections.
“The session could have been held after the elections or even during the Monsoon Session. Voices of MPs involved in elections should also have been heard,” she said.
She also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the nation, alleging that it was political in nature and that he only abused the Opposition.
Lamba demanded that the 33 per cent reservation be implemented immediately within the existing 534 seats.
She claimed that a unified Opposition prevented the government from pushing through its agenda.
“We will continue to put pressure to ensure that the law is implemented at the earliest,” she said.
Lamba said that the Congress would launch a nationwide agitation for women’s reservation and collect signatures to submit to the President of India and the prime minister in the Monsoon session. PTI SDA VN VN
