Bengaluru: C. J. Roy, the 57-year-old chairman and managing director of Bengaluru-based Confident Group, allegedly shot himself in his office in Bengaluru’s Langford Town, an upscale locality in east Bengaluru Friday evening. The Income-Tax department had carried out raids at his office in the past two-three days.

“Today in the Ashok Nagar police station limits an incident has taken place wherein the Confident Group chairman and founder has reportedly shot himself dead, as of the initial reports,” Seemanth Kumar Singh, Bengaluru city police commissioner, told reporters.

Hearing the shot, his employees ran towards his office where they found him in a pool of blood.

“He was taken to a nearby hospital where the doctors pronounced him dead. We are taking up a case and (a) suitable investigation will be done,” Singh added.

The commissioner said that there were Income Tax searches on the premises for the last two-three days but that he had no other details. The I-T team was from Kerala where the Confident group has a significant presence.

The ballistics and forensic teams are examining the office.

Speaking to Kannada TV Channels, Roy’s brother, C. J. Babu said that he had been summoned to the I-T office on 27 January and the searches were on for nearly three days.

Babu clarified that he currently has no role in the Confident Group but was earlier associated with the enterprise.

Babu alleged that his brother was being “harassed” by I-T officials and even blamed them for driving Roy to suicide.

Roy’s family is not in India and is reaching late Friday night, Singh said.

The Confident Group has been in existence since 2006 and has undertaken over 210 real estate projects, according to information on its website. It has 29 projects in Kochi, 25 projects in Thiruvananthapuram, five projects in Dubai and several others in other parts of Kerala, in Bengaluru and its outskirts. There is also one ongoing, the Golf Project, in Bangarpet.

Apart from real estate development, the group was also involved in rental services, interior design, home care and other services, including financial consulting.

There are multiple videos of Roy online with many showcasing his humble beginnings and several more alighting a Rolls Royce, private jets and helicopters.

There are videos of him with Bugatti Veyrons, Porches, Ferraris and several other cars worth several million that he reportedly owned.

Yet, even after owning a fleet of expensive cars, he was still looking for his first car, a Maruti 800, and had offered a reward of Rs 10 lakh to anyone who could help him locate it.
