Gurugram, Jul 22 (PTI) A case of negligence has been registered here against the maintenance agency and workers of a housing society where a man suffered fractures in his spine after a basketball pole suddenly collapsed during practice, police said on Wednesday.
A 22-year-old basketball player Kartik Dalal sustained fractures in his spine at three places in the accident on Monday and is currently hospitalised.
The victim’s family and residents reached the police station and lodged a complaint, calling it a case of gross negligence rather than an accident.
Following the complaint by the victim’s father an FIR was registered against the builder’s maintenance agency and its workers under Section 125A (negligence endangering life) of the BNS at Kherki Daula police station.
“Action will be taken as per the law after verifying the facts,” said Inspector Krishan Kumar, SHO of Kherki Daula police station.
Residents of the society allege that the sports complex and other public amenities had not been properly maintained for a long time. The base of the basketball pole was weak, a matter previously reported to the management but no attention was paid to it, they added.
The victim, Kartik, was playing with others around 7.15 pm when the heavy pole suddenly came crashing down. While two players managed to leap out of its path, Kartik was trapped beneath the structure.
Fellow players, security guards and residents rushed to his rescue and shifted him to a nearby hospital. Kartik’s condition is stated to be critical but stable, and he is undergoing treatment in the emergency ward.
Residents of the society are furious with the management and the maintenance agency. They allege that the iron pole on the basketball court had been rusted for a long time and was severely dilapidated. Furthermore, the pole had not been properly anchored in the ground with concrete, causing it to lean to one side. PTI COR SKY SKY
