Gurugram: Gurmail Singh (23)—one of the two suspects arrested for the killing of Nationalist Congress Party leader and former minister Baba Siddique in Mumbai Saturday— allegedly murdered his friend’s brother by stabbing him 52 times with an ice pick near the Rudri Temple in Haryana’s Kaithal on 31 May, 2019, according to residents of his home village, Nard in Kaithal district.

He was then arrested and sent to Kaithal jail. Villagers told mediapersons Sunday that he came into contact with associates of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi while in jail, and developed strong connections with the gang’s top leadership over time. After being granted bail, he did not stay in his village for long and moved to Mumbai.

Contacted by ThePrint over the phone, Kaithal SP Rajesh Kalia confirmed that Singh comes from Kaithal district. Asked if the Mumbai Police had sought any information about the accused, Kalia said the district police had not received any request from the Mumbai Police so far.

Villagers said his father had passed away, and that Singh visited the village about six months ago but hadn’t returned since.

His grandmother, Phulli Devi, expressed her contempt for him, tellling the media, “If he felt no shame before us, they might as well shoot him in the middle of the street; it wouldn’t affect us at all.”

She said that they had disowned him years ago. “As far as we’re concerned, he’s dead to us, and we’re dead to him.”

Gurmail Singh was his father’s only son. After his father’s death, his mother married his paternal uncle. She later had a son and a daughter with him, according to villagers.

  1. People like Shekhar Gupta are staunch advocates of bail. They repeat ad nauseam “Bail is the rule, jail is the exception”.
Under pressure from the media and eminent journalists, our judges are going soft on such criminal elements. Giving them bail on a regular basis. And these criminals, out on bail, are taking advantage of the laxity of our law and order setup and indulging in gory murders and other violent acts.
