At the stroke of midnight, women in blue script history—India beat South Africa to clinch 1st World Cup

New Delhi: The Indian women’s cricket team made history Sunday, clinching their first World Cup title by beating South Africa by 52 runs in a nail-biting final at Navi Mumbai’s D. Y. Patil Sports Academy.

South Africa won the toss and chose to field first. India scored 298 runs, losing 7 wickets, while South Africa scored 246 runs before Ayabonga Khaka was run out.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the team in a post on X: “A spectacular win by the Indian team in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 Finals. Their performance in the final was marked by great skill and confidence. The team showed exceptional teamwork and tenacity throughout the tournament. Congratulations to our players. This historic win will motivate future champions to take up sports.”
