Guwahati, Apr 16 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday hailed the discovery of a new gecko species, describing it as a proud moment for the state and the Northeast region.

In a post on X, Sarma said: “A proud moment for Assam and the Northeast. The discovery of a new gecko species, Cyrtodactylus jayadityai, highlights our rich biodiversity and the growing strength of our researchers.” He, however, did not mention where the new species has been located.

“It is heartening to see our conservation efforts and scientific talent come together to bring such discoveries to light,” Sarma said.

Geckos are small, mostly carnivorous lizards that have a wide distribution, found on every continent except Antarctica. PTI TR TR MNB
