New Delhi: The Ashram flyover and its extension, connecting to the Delhi-Noida Direct Flyway, will open to commuters on Monday, Delhi government officials said. The flyover, which allows traffic on the Ring Road to bypass cross traffic on Mathura Road, was shut for two months so that it could be linked with an extension that was constructed about 50 metres further.
The move is expected to significantly ease traffic at the intersection and throughout Delhi’s southern, southeastern, and central regions.
The flyover is all set to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Public Works Minister Kailash Gahlot at noon on Monday and will be open to the public at 5pm. The Public Works Department and Delhi Traffic Police decided that only light vehicles would be allowed to use the facility in its initial phase of operation.
The advisory issued by the traffic police on Sunday also stated that commuters using the Barapullah flyover are now advised to use the Ashram flyover.
“Only light vehicles coming from Gurugram, Chirag Delhi, Kalkaji, Khanpur, Greater Kailash, Saket, AIIMS, INA, Sadarjung and Dhaula Kuan sides and going towards Sarai Kale Khan, Gaziabad, DND, Noida and Trans-Yamuna areas are advised to take the Ashram Flyover instead of Barapulla Flyover,” the advisory added.
The basic civil structure of the 1.4 km-long extension is complete, according to a senior PWD official overseeing the Ashram project, but the remaining associated infrastructure such as street lights, road markings, signage, and other facilities, will be finished over the course of the following month.
