New Delhi: Two students were found dead Friday night at the Ashoka University campus in Sonipat, according to Haryana Police and the university, with one of them suspected to have died by suicide. The two deaths did not appear to be linked.
Senior Haryana Police officials told ThePrint that the body of the 20-year-old student from Telangana, who is suspected to have died after jumping from the 10th floor of the hostel, was found on the ground outside the building.
The body of another 19-year-old student from Bengaluru, who is suspected to have died from heart failure, was found near the university’s gate.
“The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. The report is awaited. Prima facie, it appears that one student died due to injuries inflicted due to the fall. The other is suspected to have died due to heart failure,” a senior police official told ThePrint.
Adding, “Appropriate legal action is being taken. We are questioning the students and staff. Things will be clearer once autopsy reports come in.”
The officer said that Haryana Police was also recording the statements of family members.
According to the police, the first call was received at 10pm about a student having fallen from a hostel building. The other student was reported unconscious around 2:30am.
On Saturday, Ashoka University issued a statement saying that a suicide note had been recovered from the room of a student. “It is with profound sorrow that we share the news of the sad demise of two of our students in tragic, unrelated incidents on 14-02-25. A suicide note was recovered from a student’s room, and he was found unconscious shortly after,” the university said in the statement.
It further said that, a few hours later, a second student was reported to have experienced loss of consciousness outside the campus. “They were rushed in our ambulance to the nearest hospital where they were declared dead,” the Ashoka University statement added.
The statement said that the university was cooperating “fully with local authorities for the requisite investigations”.
Students ThePrint spoke to said that they were still waiting for official communication from the university on the issue. “Most students are not on campus because of the weekend. We’re still waiting to hear from the university for updates and to get some clarity on the situation,” a 4th-year undergraduate student said.
