Itanagar, Oct 2 (PTI) Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Friday congratulated Assam-born boxer Lovlina Borgohain for scripting history by winning the women’s 75kg gold at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan, saying her achievement had once again brought pride to the Northeast and the entire country.

Borgohain clinched the gold on her birthday, adding a special touch to an already memorable achievement and becoming only the second Indian woman boxer to win an Asian Games gold after legendary M C Mary Kom.

“Historic gold for Lovlina Borgohain! A new chapter in Indian boxing,” Khandu said in a post on X, describing the victory as a moment of great pride for the country.

Khandu said it was particularly remarkable that Borgohain achieved the feat on her birthday.

Praising the boxer’s journey from Assam and the Northeast to the top of Asian boxing, Khandu said Lovlina has once again made the entire nation proud.

Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein also congratulated Borgohain on her historic feat, saying her performance had brought honour to the country and the region.

“What a way to celebrate your birthday by bringing home the highest honour for the nation. Your grit, determination, and fighting spirit have made the country proud,” he said in a social media post.

Mein described the victory as “a golden birthday, and a golden moment for the Northeast and India”.

Borgohain defeated China’s Bao Ziyi by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the women’s 75kg final at Nishio.

The gold added another major achievement to the career of the Assam boxer, who had earlier won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. PTI UPL NN

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
