Amaravati, Jun 21 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh government on Sunday constituted an SIT to investigate allegations of illegal detention, custodial torture, and murder of Gade Sai Krishna levelled against a police inspector, who was ultimately suspended.

However, no deadline was given to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to submit its findings with regard to the allegations against Inspector SSVV Nagaraju.

Over the past few days, Andhra Pradesh has been shaken by the alleged “missing” of Krishna, whose mother accused Vijayawada’s Krishna Lanka police inspector (now suspended) Nagaraju of torturing her son to death and then clandestinely cremating his dead body without the knowledge of family members.

“Considering the gravity and sensitivity of the allegations against suspended inspector Nagaraju, including illegal detention, custodial torture, murder and destruction of evidence in the Gade Sai Krishna case, the government has constituted a SIT to ensure a transparent, impartial and credible investigation,” a Government Order (GO) on Sunday said.

The SIT was constituted following a proposal from DGP Harish Kumar Gupta after a case was registered based on a complaint lodged by Krishna’s family members against Nagaraju.

According to the government, the case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) over allegations that Nagaraju had illegally detained Krishna, subjected him to custodial torture, murdered him and subsequently hidden the evidence.

Nagaraju is presently under suspension.

The SIT will be headed by IG M Ravi Prakash and comprise West Godavari SP Adnan Nayeem Asmi, Alluri Sitharama Raju district SP Amit Bardar and Bapatla Additional SP L Sudhakar as members.

The government said the SIT would exercise all powers of investigation available under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 and other applicable laws for investigating the crime.

The head of the SIT has been authorised to nominate one of the officers as the investigating officer, assign duties among team members and requisition additional manpower, technical assistance, forensic support and other resources required for the probe.

The DGP has been directed to provide office accommodation, infrastructure, logistical support and other facilities required by the SIT for carrying out the investigation.

All government departments, heads of departments, forensic agencies and other authorities concerned have been directed to extend full cooperation and render necessary assistance to the SIT for an expeditious and effective investigation.

The SIT has been asked to complete the investigation expeditiously and in accordance with law, while Gupta has been directed to take further necessary action. PTI MS GDK ADB
