AMU orders probe into ‘forgery’, bid to ‘take over’ Aligarh Public School

Aligarh (UP), Apr 21 (PTI) Amid allegations of forgery and an attempted takeover, Aligarh Muslim University has set up a committee to investigate how control of Aligarh Public School was allegedly sought to be transferred, and funds were moved without authorisation.

The school, established by AMU in 1977, has remained under the university’s ownership and administrative control. However, recent developments, including a disputed financial transaction and a claim over its management, have triggered a major controversy on campus.

According to an official release, the probe will examine the alleged forging of the signature of the then AMU Registrar in July 2025, through which Rs 4.8 crore was reportedly transferred from one bank to another without the university’s approval. No funds were withdrawn as the university promptly alerted the bank about the “questionable transaction”.

The signature is said to belong to a senior IPS officer, who had served as Registrar on deputation till 2023. University officials said he claimed that the signature on the cheque was forged and that he was no longer associated with AMU at the time.

Despite this, no FIR was filed then, a point now being questioned.

AMU Proctor Naved Khan told PTI, “We intend to file a report with the police within a day or two after receiving the report of the enquiry committee.” The issue escalated in March 2026 when Vice Chancellor Naima Khatoon received a letter from the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) of the school claiming that its affairs would now be handled by the Aligarh Public School Shiksha Samiti, and that AMU had “no locus standi”.

The claim triggered protests, with the AMU Teachers Association alleging a conspiracy to take over property worth crores.

AMUTA secretary Ashraf Mateen told PTI, “We have formed a monitoring committee to track this entire scam. We are also writing to the vice chancellor to probe why no FIR was filed in July 2025 when it was confirmed that the former Registrar’s signature had been forged to transfer the school’s funds without due permission.” He added that the role of bank officials was also under suspicion, noting that the officer whose signature was forged had left AMU in 2023, and the bank had been informed about the change.

Mateen said, “The matter took a serious turn last week when some persons suddenly arrived claiming themselves to be members of a school committee at the school premises and tried to forcibly take control of the offices. Police intervened, and the status quo was restored.” The inquiry committee is expected to submit its report shortly, Mateen added. PTI COR KIS APL
