Chandigarh, Jul 22 (PTI) Two persons were arrested for allegedly attacking the driver of a bus carrying devotees under the state government’s ‘Mukh Mantri Tirth Yatra Scheme’ in Amritsar, police said on Wednesday.
The incident took place on Tuesday evening when the bus was returning to Amritsar from the Attari-Wagah border, they said.
After the bus reached near the defence drain area, two persons travelling in a car allegedly stopped the vehicle, attacked the driver with an axe and also scuffled with passengers, DSP (Attari) Yadwinder Singh said.
The police arrested the accused, Gurvinder Singh and Bakshish Singh, shortly after the incident, he said.
A case has been registered against the two under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and further investigation is underway.
The Punjab government operates the ‘Mukh Mantri Tirth Yatra Scheme’ to facilitate free pilgrimage for elderly people to religious places.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Baltej Pannu condemned the incident, describing it as an “attack” on the bus.
