Gangtok, Apr 14 (PTI) Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur on Tuesday said BR Ambedkar envisioned a society founded on equality, and stressed that true democracy rests on social and economic justice alongside political equality.

Addressing a programme marking the 135th birth anniversary of the national icon at the state assembly, Mathur highlighted Ambedkar’s role in combating caste-based discrimination and ensuring the principles of liberty, equality and fraternity.

He also underlined Ambedkar’s contributions to inclusive development, universal adult franchise, labour welfare and women’s empowerment.

He said the Centre has undertaken several initiatives for the upliftment of Scheduled Castes, including scholarships, fellowships and skill development programmes.

The Sikkim government, he added, is implementing welfare schemes, strengthening educational infrastructure and ensuring equitable access to opportunities at the grassroots level.

The governor also emphasised strict enforcement of laws protecting the rights and dignity of SCs, along with legal aid and awareness initiatives, and reiterated the state’s commitment to social harmony and inclusiveness.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang also attended the programme, but did not address the gathering.

Later in a message, he said the day is a reminder of a remarkable life dedicated to giving a voice to the unheard and dignity to those long denied it.

“Babasaheb’s journey, marked by courage and conviction, reshaped the conscience of our nation and laid the groundwork for a more just and inclusive India,” he said.

“As we remember him today, let us carry forward his ideals in both thought and action by promoting harmony, standing against discrimination, and uplifting those in need. Each small step in this direction brings us closer to the India he envisioned,” he added.

The event was organised by the Social Welfare Department in coordination with the All Sikkim Scheduled Caste Welfare Association (ASSCWA).

During the programme, a publication titled ‘Bhim Chetna’ and a poetry collection were released.

Felicitations were also presented to distinguished personalities and state toppers from the Scheduled Caste community. PTI CORR SOM
