New Delhi: At 5:30 pm Wednesday, BSF jawans of the South Bengal Frontier in the Jeetpur border outpost area noticed a suspicious looking person on a bicycle crossing the India-Bangladesh border, entering India.
As the jawans approached, the man dropped the bicycle and fled towards Kashipur village in West Bengal. The alert jawans began checking the bicycle and noticed an unusual bulge in the tyres.
A thorough inspection led to the recovery of 20 gold biscuits, weighing around 2.367 kg estimated to be around Rs 2.31 crore, from inside the bicycle’s rear tyre—the second such foiling of gold smuggling attempt in as many days
On Tuesday, the BSF’s 67 Battalion of the South Bengal Frontier had seized gold worth about Rs 2.43 crore during checks at the Laxmipur border outpost. This was done after intelligence inputs were received about a possible smuggling attempt.

Acting on the information, alerts were sent to patrol parties and check posts along the border. Around 7:45 am, the jawans spotted an individual on a motorcycle approaching from the direction of Laxmipur village and it was stopped for inspection. The inspection revealed two packets wrapped with plastic tape, hidden under the seat cover. 1 gold bar and 16 gold biscuits valued at Rs 2.43 crore were seized.
The smuggler was taken into custody. Initial interrogation revealed that he had received the gold from a person in Laxmipur village and was on his way to deliver it to an unknown individual at the Bangaon bus stand via Boyra village and was promised Rs 1,000 per kg upon delivery of the consignment.
In February, during the 55th Director General-level Border Coordination Conference with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, BSF Director General Daljit Singh Chaudhary had discussed various issues including cross-border smuggling. These DG-level meetings have been taking place twice a year, alternating between Dhaka and New Delhi, since 1993.
India shares a 4,096 km-long border with Bangladesh, stretching from Meghalaya to West Bengal. The February discussion was the first for the two border forces after the Sheikh Hasina-led government was ousted from power in Bangladesh in August 2024.
