Mumbai, Apr 2 (PTI) Jay Pawar, the younger son of late NCP chief Ajit Pawar, has been inducted into the ‘apex committee’ of the party, marking his formal entry into politics.

“Jay Pawar is a young leader and he will be given some responsibility as he is now part of the apex committee, our top decision-making body,” said Nationalist Congress Party chief spokesperson Anand Paranjpe.

Jay was named as a member of the apex committee in a letter sent by party president and Maharashtra deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar to the Election Commission of India on March 10, he said.

The letter informed the ECI about Sunetra Pawar taking reins of the party following her husband Ajit Pawar’s death in an air crash on January 28, and gave details about the other top office-bearers.

Jay Pawar was inducted in the apex committee following the party’s national convention held on February 26. Sunetra Pawar was elected national president at the convention.

“Jay Pawar will take forward the work of the party and contribute to its organisation,” Paranjpe said.

Jay is the latest member of the Pawar family to join active politics. While NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar has been in politics for six decades, his nephew Ajit Pawar joined him in the late 1980s. Sharad Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule became a Rajya Sabha member in 2006, while his grand-nephew Rohit Pawar won a local body election in 2017 and later became an MLA.

Parth Pawar, Jay’s elder brother, is now a Rajya Sabha member.

The other members of the apex committee include Sunetra Pawar, Praful Patel, Sunil Tatkare, Chhagan Bhujbal, Dilip Walse-Patil, Manikrao Kokate, Chetan Tupe, Shekhar Nikam, Subodh Mohite, Shivajirao Garje, Saroj Ahire, Sana Malik and Dhiraj Sharma. PTI ND KRK
