Guwahati, Mar 10 (PTI) Opposition All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) announced the first list of nine candidates for the upcoming Assam assembly elections, according to a party circular.

AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal on Monday night declared the list of candidates, retaining three of the existing MLAs and introducing two new women faces.

The Assam assembly elections for 126 constituencies are expected to take place next month. This will be the first assembly election after the delimitation exercise, which was done in 2023.

AIUDF has given ticket to incumbent Aminul Islam, Hafiz Rafiqul Islam and Nizanur Rahman from Rupahihat, Mandia and Gauripur constituencies, respectively.

Presently, these three senior party leaders are the MLAs of Dhing, Jania and Gauripur seats, respectively.

The two women nominees of AIUDF in the first list are Minakshi Rahman for Paka Betbari and Sabana Akhtar for Bilasipara.

The other candidates named by AIUDF are Abu Taher Bepari (Parbatjhora), Rejaul Karim Sarkar (Srijangram), Matiur Rahman (Dhing) and Siddque Ahmed (Laharighat).

AIUDF is not part of any opposition alliance, although it had tried to join the Congress-led bloc.

Presently, the ruling BJP’s strength in the 126-member Assam assembly is 64, while its allies AGP has nine MLAs, UPPL has seven and BPF has three members.

In the opposition camp, the Congress has 26 legislators, AIUDF has 15 members and CPI(M) has one MLA. There is an Independent legislator as well. PTI TR TR ACD
