Hyderabad, Jul 20 (PTI) BJP in Telangana on Monday alleged that several local leaders belonging to the AIMIM and Congress were intimidating members of communities who have migrated from other parts of the country during the ongoing SIR.
In a representation submitted to state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) C Sudharshan Reddy, BJP said workers belonging to AIMIM and ruling Congress were indulging in acts of coercion and threats against certain sections of voters residing in Hyderabad and Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituencies, particularly those who migrated from other parts of the country.
Numerous complaints have emerged that such voters are being falsely informed that they are not entitled to continue as electors in Telangana, the party alleged.
BJP further said certain individuals are forcibly collecting, withholding and taking away enumeration forms from voters, thereby interfering with the lawful electoral process and creating an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty,.
Such actions, if left unchecked, strike at the very foundation of democratic governance, it said.
The party further claimed that Congress leaders, including Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, were stating that people have to be enrolled as voters in rural areas failing which they will be denied various benefits received from state and central governments.
BJP urged the CEO that senior officers from other states be appointed as electoral roll observers and also conduct an immediate inquiry into the allegations of intimidation, threats in the electoral enumeration process in Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Chevella and Malkajgiri parliamentary constituencies.
The saffron party also requested the CEO, among others, to ensure deployment of Central forces to provide adequate police protection and vigilance in sensitive localities to safeguard voters from coercion and undue influence.
The house-to-house enumeration for the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls commenced in Telangana on June 25 and the exercise would continue August 3. PTI SJR SJR SA
