Guwahati, Jan 8 (PTI) Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria said the contribution of agriculture and allied sector to the state’s GDP is 19.89 per cent, and called upon the stakeholders to avail benefits of various schemes for the growth of their income.

Taking part in the Livestock and Poultry Show 2024 here, Kataria said the government has always been encouraging local farmers and youths to meet the demand for milk, meat and eggs within the state.

“As a result, many new startups have emerged in the state and people are gradually becoming self-reliant. The contribution of agriculture and allied sectors to the state’s GDP is 19.89 per cent, out of which only the livestock and poultry sector contributes 5.30 per cent,” he added.

Kataria stressed that the farmers’ income can be increased if they use modern technology in sectors like cattle rearing, poultry and dairy production.

He also gave examples of Gujarat and Punjab where the states have progressed in agriculture and milk production.

“It is a matter of satisfaction that at present Assam is a leading state in the country in the field of pig production and has also progressed phenomenally in poultry production. In milk and egg production, the state is gearing up,” the governor said.

Under the Assam Dairy Development Scheme, a target of producing 10 lakh litres of milk per day has been set.

Kataria asked the department concerned to take concerted steps to organise the unorganised dairy sector and form clusters to ensure sustainable marketing of milk in the state.

He expressed happiness that to double the income of farmers, the government has implemented schemes like Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM), National Livestock Mission (NLM), Livestock Health and Disease Control (LH and DC) programme and Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY).

Kataria urged the farmers to take advantage of the government schemes to ensure sustainable growth in agriculture and allied sectors. PTI TR TR SOM
