Agra: In a surprising incident that has left the Agra Police Commissionerate scratching their heads, a motorbike from their rapid response team was stolen while it was parked near Agra Fort during a patrol. The theft has sparked questions about the effectiveness of police patrolling when even the vehicles of officers on duty aren’t safe.
According to Sadar Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Vinayak Bhosale, the theft occurred on the night of 22 March, in front of the Amar Singh Gate of Agra Fort. Head Constable Kaushalendra Singh had parked his bike there while he and his colleague, Constable Govindram, were on foot patrol investigating suspicious activity.
The ACP stated that Kaushalendra had parked the ‘Cheetah’ bike near the tourism police booth. When he returned just a few minutes later, the bike was gone.
The two policemen searched the area for several hours but were unable to locate the bike.
Speaking to ThePrint, sources at the Rakabganj Police Station, where the constables are posted, said that the incident was initially not formally reported. Instead, an informal search for the bike was underway. However, after the information eventually leaked on social media, the police registered the theft case at Rakabganj Monday night.
This is not the first incident of a police bike being stolen in the Agra Commissionerate. About 15 days ago, another police Cheetah bike was stolen from the Infantry Line Police Post in Agra’s Sadar area. An FIR was filed at the Sadar Police Station regarding this theft.
Investigations later revealed that the bike had been stolen for scrapping after its parts were removed. Three individuals were arrested in connection with that theft. However, this latest incident has raised concerns about the potential presence of another bike-thief gang operating in the area.
