New Delhi: The Delhi Police’s South-East District apprehended 966 people under various charges in a span of 24 hours Friday as part of Operation Aaghat 3.0, a “pre-emptive strike on organised crime and habitual criminals” ahead of New Year celebrations.
This comes less than two months after the 10 November Red Fort blast, which left 15 people dead and over 20 injured. The blast, which occurred at a red light near the Red Fort metro station, triggered by one Dr Umar un Nabi who was behind the wheel of a Hyundai i20 car, stumped the city that had gone 14 years without terror.
Among them, 331 were arrested under the Delhi Excise Act, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and the Public Gambling Act. A total of 350 arrests were made Friday.
As part of the drive, the police recovered 21 country-made pistols, 20 live cartridges as well as 27 knives under the Arms Act. A total 12,258 quarters of illegal liquor were also seized, along with 6 kg ganja (marijuana), Rs 2.36 lakh cash from gamblers, six two-wheelers, a four-wheeler and 310 mobile phones.
Overseen by Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha, Operation Aaghat 3.0 is part of a “sustained and proactive strategy to combat criminal elements and curb street crimes effectively”, said the Delhi Police press release.
A total of 600 police personnel were involved in the operation, executed under the supervision of Joint Commissioner of Police, Southern Range, Sanjay Jain and led by Deputy Commissioner of Police, South-East District, Hemant Tiwari. The initiative involved the collective efforts of Additional DCP Ishan Bhardwaj, all ACsP, SHOs, and their field staff across the district.
The Delhi Police statement further said that Operation Aaghat will now be conducted every month to “systematically break the backbone of habitual criminals and dismantle organised criminal syndicates across the capital”.
