Agartala, Jul 24 (PTI) A three-member team headed by the West Tripura SP will investigate the unnatural death of DGP Anurag Dhankar, said a state government order issued on Friday.
Dhankar, who led the CBI probe into the alleged Rs 13,000 crore PNB fraud involving diamantaire Nirav Modi and the reinvestigation of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, was found hanging in the washroom of his chamber at the state police headquarters here on Monday.
“The unnatural death of DGP Anurag Dhankar will be investigated by a three-member team led by West Tripura Superintendent of Police (SP) Namit Pathak. West Tripura Additional SP Druba Nath and Sub Inspector (SI) and existing Investigating Officer (IO) Subhojit Deb will assist the SP in the investigation,” the Tripura government order said.
In case of necessity, the SP may co-opt any other officer from the Tripura Police Crime Branch or any other unit.
For any technical support, the West Tripura district superintendent of police may seek help from the cyber crime unit, the order said “Progress report in connection with the investigation may be submitted on a weekly basis to Inspector General (IG), Law and Order, Manchak Ipper for perusal of the Director General of Police (DGP), Tripura,” the order said.
State Home Secretary Abhishek Singh said the police have already received the post-mortem report but stopped short of disclosing its content.
“The police have received the post-mortem report of the DGP. Investigation into the unnatural death is progressing as per law,” he said.
Earlier, DGP in-charge GS Rao had hinted at forming a team to supervise and investigate the unnatural death of Dhankar.
As part of the investigation, uniform, official vehicle and electronic devices of Dhankar were seized for forensic examinations, another officer said.
The last rites of the 1994-batch IPS officer were performed in his native village Baraut in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, with full honour on July 22. PTI PS BDC
