New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department on Wednesday issued an orange alert for rural and urban Bengaluru after heavy rains overnight.
Two workers were found dead at a pipeline work site since the heavy showers Tuesday. The men – Devbharath from Bihar and Ankit Kumar from Uttar Pradesh – had sheltered inside the pipeline when it started to rain heavily around 7 pm last evening. They got trapped as the water level rose, authorities said. Another worker was able to escape.
Officials said two contractors have been detained, while a probe is on to determine if the work site adopted proper safety measures.
Incidentally, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) was carrying out work at the accident site.
The Met department said Bengaluru received 114.6 mm of rainfall till 8:30 am Wednesday.
There were waterlogging and power-cuts in many parts of the city since Tuesday night. Metro services were also disrupted briefly due to power failure.
The most affected areas were JP Nagar, Jayanagar, Lalbagh, Chickpet, Majestic, Malleswaram, Rajajinagar, Yeshwantpur, MG Road, Cubbon Park and Mysore Road among others.
