New Delhi: An 18-year-old has been accused of stabbing an auto-rickshaw driver in Delhi after he intervened in an alleged fight that broke out when his friend was run over by a water tanker.
The police have arrested Arif Khan, a resident of Delhi’s Sangam Vihar.
Cops said the passengers of an auto had stopped a Delhi Jal Board tanker on Ratiya Marg Wednesday afternoon. The altercation began when the tanker splashed water on them while navigating a waterlogged street. The men had been assisting the auto driver, whose vehicle had broken down, when they got splashed. In response, they started throwing stones at the tanker. As the driver attempted to flee the spot, one of the men came under its wheels.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South district) Ankit Singh said the occupants of the broken down auto vandalised the tanker and were pelting stones at it, forcing the tanker driver Sapan Singh to find a way out. In the melee, a man identified as Sahadabb Alam came under the tanker’s wheels and died.
The tanker driver immediately fled the scene.
The DCP said when the accused couldn’t find Singh, they started vandalising the tanker again. “A resident of Sangam Vihar, Bablu Ahmed, an auto driver, was crossing the area and intervened, asking why the tanker was being vandalised. At this point, the accused stabbed Bablu.”
Bablu was rushed to hospital and his condition is stable.
“Further investigation is underway,” the DCP added. The police have registered a case under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 106 (1) (rash and negligent driving leading to death) and 281 (rash driving) against the driver Sapan Singh.
