New Delhi: Under the new initiative, 10,000 farmer producer organizations (FPOs) registered under the ‘Formation & Promotion of 10,000 FPOs scheme’ will be converted into Common Services Centres (CSCs) through an MoU signed between CSC SPV and the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmer’s Welfare. This move aims to increase employment opportunities in rural areas by enabling FPOs to deliver citizen-centric services, a PIB press release stated.

The Central Sector Scheme for the formation and promotion of 10,000 farmer producer organizations (FPOs) was launched by the government of India in 2020. The scheme aims to enable farmers to enhance their bargaining power and leverage the economies of scale. This will help in reducing the cost of production and increasing the farmers’ income. The government expects that the services provided by CSCs through FPOs will increase the employment opportunities in rural areas.

CSCs have a vast network of services, providing tele-consultation, crop insurance, e-veterinary, Kisan Credit Card, and PM Kisan schemes to the farmers of remote areas of the country. Under the new initiative, 10,000 farmer producer organizations (FPOs) will be converted into CSCs.
