New Delhi: Addressing the nation from the ramparts of Red Fort on India’s 78th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his speech, touched upon Aatmanirbhar Bharat, youth skill development, increased number of natural disaster incidents and the issue of women’s safety.
“I would like to express my pain from the Red Fort again today. As a society, we will have to think seriously about the atrocities against women that are happening — there is outrage against this in the country. I can feel this outrage. The country, society, and state governments will have to take this seriously,” he said.
“Speedy investigation of crimes against women, those executing these monstrous deeds be awarded strict punishment at the earliest, this is important to instill confidence in society,” he added.
Mention of women’s safety in PM Modi’s speech comes at a time when there are nationwide protests being held demanding justice for the trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital who was brutally raped and murdered on 9 August.
Modi donned a vibrant lehariya turban this year, and paired it with a white kurta and a blue jacket. This marks his 11th address to the nation as the country’s prime minister.
